Advice for Adults

A child may feel anxious when other children and adults mention the loss.  A child may feel anxious when other children and adults don't mention the loss.  It is a no win situation.  If this is a problem for a child, then discuss it with the child's school guidance counselor or principal.

I had a hard time getting my son to return to school after his dad died.  My son and I went to the school one day a week for the first week, two days a week for the second week, and so on.  The principal made sure that we received class work and homework assignments, and my son's absences were counted as excused.

By the end of the six weeks, my son was comfortable going back to school.  A child spends more waking hours in a day at school than at home.  School personnel are concerned.  Ask for their help.

My mother understood that I was in pain, but I couldn't seem to communicate just how much it hurt.  She wrote her book to make sure that other children find it easier to talk about their loss.  I'm very proud of what she's done.
